Summerhill Clock Tower

This is the clock tower above an old train station a few blocks south of where I live. (At Summerhill; hence the title.) It is no longer a train station; it is now a LIQUOR STORE. Anyway, at night there are floodlights shining upward on it and the clock faces are lit from behind, and in front of the slightly-red urban night sky I thought it was quite a compelling subject.

The side-facing side of the tower I'm quite happy with, but not so much the front-facing side. It just seems to lack depth and it looks a little sloppy in general. This was supposed to be a Christmas present for my family but I might not actually give it to them because of the sloppiness.

It sounds like a weird thing to say, but I also rather enjoy the shade of black along the right side of the painting. It's VERY subtly tinted with orange (i.e. so subtly that you basically don't notice it) but the effect is that it looks like a more solid black than you would get with using straight black. Quite possibly this is because black pigments are imperfect, such that 'ivory black' (which I used) is actually a little bit gray or blue, and perhaps the orange 'corrected' it. ANYWAY, I LIKE IT.

PS. this painting was originally started to be a Christmas present for my family ... last year. That's how slow I am.
